Amazing buildings in Hertfordshire

As professional building surveyors, we’re used to observing buildings. Whether beautiful or dilapidated, we design, specify, measure and monitor construction works for a wide range of building types- so amazing buildings are something we can’t ignore in our local area of Hertfordshire!
Here are some of the best buildings in Hertfordshire:
Knebworth House
A grade II listed building, Knebworth House dates back to the Tudor times. Home to the Lytton family for over five hundred years, Knebworth House was once a red-brick manor house.
Its now lavish exterior displays turrets, domes, gargoyles and gryphons in a Tudor gothic style since being remodelled in the early 1800s.
Nowadays it serves as a house, park, dinosaur trail, adventure park and rock concert venue and is open to the public.
Hatfield House
Hatfield house is a large house and park situated just twenty one miles from the city of London. Built in the early 1600s by the first Earl of Salisbury, Robert Cecil, the house neighbours the Old Palace of Hatfield site. Examples of Jacobean artistry can be seen throughout the house including in the chapel’s stained glass window and fine carving within its grand staircase.
Surrounded by a deer park, this magnificent building is now home of the seventh Marquess of Salisbury and its’ grounds are open to the public.
Ye Olde Fighting Cocks
Dating right back to the 11th Century, this St Albans pub is Britain’s Oldest. Originally built in the eighth century, the pub was situated next to St Albans Cathedral but was moved in the 1530s after the dissolution of the Abbey.
Now standing just opposite the Cathedral, there’s an underground tunnel running from the beer cellar over to it, said to once be used by the Monks.
The main pub is a free standing, octagonal building, still with its original timber structure.
Its low ceilings and riveting nooks and crannies (such as the bread oven next to the main fireplace) are what makes this ancient building so spectacular.
Hertford Castle
A grade I listed building, Hertford castle gatehouse is like something straight out of a fairytale. Situated by the side of the River Lea, this 15th Century building is a magnificent reminder of ancient architecture.
The castle itself was used as a lodge for royalty for around three hundred years between the 13th and 16th centuries. Continuous use of the castle deteriorated the building and it was later demolished in the late 1500s.
Hertford Castle Gatehouse is all that remains of Hertford Castle nowadays, its castle-like exterior set in beautiful secluded grounds.
