How to Approach Your Neighbours About Construction Plans

For many people, home improvements are a more affordable option than moving house, and with so many new and innovative designs that you can incorporate into your home you can near enough create anything you'd like. However, it’s not uncommon in these situations that disputes can arise between you and your neighbours, especially when you need their permission to start renovations.

To help you approach your neighbours in the right way, this blog will provide some top tips on how to tell them about your construction plans.


Introduce yourself

If you’ve moved into a new property and you plan on renovating in the future, it’s important that your neighbours know who you are! Make the effort to introduce yourself, but be genuine with how you do this - you don’t want to come across as fake. If your neighbours know who you are then they will be more likely to grant permission if required, and communication between you will be a lot better.


Inform them in person

Once you have a solid plan for your renovations, it’s a good idea to inform them in person with a good length of notice before you plan on starting work. You should also have a written version of this so your neighbours can refer back, raise any concerns and send their agreement back to you in writing.


Show plans

Seeing a visual representation of your renovation plans is a great way of informing your neighbours, giving them a clear idea of what to expect and how this will affect their property. Offer them a copy of blueprints or other visual aids so they aren’t shocked by any surprises once work begins and always be honest - holding back information could lead to bigger legal problems further down the line. You should also inform them of a rough timeframe for completion and what time of day work is likely to be done.

When your neighbours are well informed about your plans they’ll feel more in the loop, alternatively, there are many reasons why they may object to your work including:


Issues with the design

Disruption from builders

Fear or property damage

Loss of privacy

Lack of natural light
