Three Ideas for a Home Extension

Home extension

As cities become increasingly populated, it’s likely that many of us would like some extra space in our homes, whether it’s for storage, entertaining or an extra bedroom. A lot of people opt for a loft or basement conversion, but if this isn’t an option for your home or you’d like more space, you may be considering a home extension.

If you have the space, a house extension is a great way to add value to your property and enable you to live more comfortably. What you use your extension for will depend on your individual requirements but if you’re stuck for ideas, see below for just three effective uses for a home extension.

An extra bedroom

Many of us would love to have friends or family to stay but this can be an issue if there isn’t a comfortable place for them to sleep. Adding an extra bedroom by building a house extension ensures your guests have a comfortable, quiet place to stay and it’s somewhere for homeowners to relax away from the main house when not in use.

A new kitchen

The kitchen is often referred to as ‘the heart of the home’ and it can be stressful trying to cook or entertain in a space that’s too small. New kitchens are one of the most popular choices for a home extension and it can add as much as 4% to the total value of your property.

Playroom

Anyone with children will know how easy it is for a space to quickly become cluttered with toys, books or necessary equipment like prams and highchairs. Using an extension to create a playroom allows you to keep most of your children’s toys in one place so the rest of the house stays (relatively!) tidy. You could also add elements to encourage creative play like a chalkboard wall or boxes and blankets to build forts.

Every extension is different, but in many cases, it’s wise to get a building or structural survey of your property before going ahead. The expert team of chartered surveyors at Simon Levy are on hand to carry out these surveys on your behalf and we can identify any potential problems before you go ahead with the building work.
