3 Factors To Consider When Hiring A Surveyor

Building surveyors are an essential part of any construction or renovation project you’ll undertake. Trained professionals, you should see them as a construction expert that makes sure everything is done to a high standard. They’ll ensure the renovation or construction is done the way it should be.

Not all local surveyors are the same, and some will be much more equipped for your needs than others. You’ll need to find the right one for your renovation or construction project. What should you look for when hiring building surveyors?

Three particular factors stand out. They’ll help with your decision more than you’d think.

Qualifications

Surveying isn’t an area that anybody can get into. It requires qualifications before anyone can even consider calling themselves a construction expert. Most will have some construction-related degree, such as property development or surveying.

Coupled with that is accreditation. In England, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors oversees this. It certifies that a specific professional has the training, knowledge, and experience needed to perform the work you’re hiring them for.

If the local surveyors you’re considering lack these degrees or accreditation, they shouldn’t be worth considering. On the other hand, you’ll find options that have a wealth of education and certifications, which come highly recommended.

References

Every company claims the work they do is top quality and that you’ll have nothing to worry about that. Of course they’ll say that, as they’re not going to say anything negative about themselves. To make sure what they’re saying is actually accurate, you’ll need to get some references.

Previous clients can tell you exactly what their experience was with the local surveyors they used, giving you a much more accurate impression of their work. The better-recommended a particular construction expert is, the more confident you should feel in hiring them.

The same can be said if references are negative. Avoid these at all costs.

Experience

Surveying is a broad field, and there are multiple specialities in it. You’ll need to take this into account when considering building surveyors. Two options won’t be alike. Not only will they have different degrees of experience, but they could specialise in vastly different areas.

You’ll have to make sure they’re experienced enough in the area you’re having surveyed. Hiring a construction expert that has this - or even a company that employs multiple surveyors - makes sure everything is looked over the way it should be.

Taking this approach is also useful if you have multiple properties, as hiring the same local surveyors makes sure everything is consistent.

Here at Simon Levy associations, we are a team of experienced building surveyors, specialising in all aspects of the process. Our qualified local surveyors are more than happy to provide you with multiple references to help you make your decision.
