We’re sure that you have heard of asbestos before. It is a substance that was used in building houses in the 1900’s, but has since been banned as it was proven that it could cause some kinds of cancer. As such, all buildings with this material had to cease, but the homes that already had this in them were left as they are. As such, there are still some homes today that will have this in them, and it’s important to have this knowledge as you may want to have it removed.

In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at how you can find out if there is asbestos in your home, so keep reading if you would like to find out more.

Your Home Is Older

First, if your home is older and was built before around 2000, then there is a chance that there is asbestos used somewhere in the home. The use of asbestos was actually banned in 1985, but there are still homes from a few years later where it was still used. As such, if your home was built a long time ago then you should consider getting it checked for asbestos. Undisturbed asbestos is not usually dangerous, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be.

Cement Water Tanks And Sheets

Older cement water tanks often contain asbestos. If you have one of these in your home, you need to get your water tank tested as soon as you can. As well as this, cement sheets are likely to contain asbestos if they were put in before 1986. The surrounding areas likely have asbestos in them if the cement sheets do, so it’s worth taking a look at. The last thing that you want is to get ill because of the material that was used to build your home.

Call a Professional

If you think that there might be asbestos in your home, or you are concerned that this could be the case, then we recommend you call in a professional. This is the only way that you are going to know for sure whether or not asbestos is present in the property. If it is, then there are services that are able to remove that for you, something you should never do on your own. Asbestos can be dangerous, especially when it is disturbed, so make sure you are leaving this job to the people who are trained to do so.

When you purchase a house, asbestos should come up on the survey if it is present, but if you didn’t get one, then you would never know. We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the ways that you can find out if there is asbestos in your home. If there is, then you might go down the path of choosing to remove it to avoid the potential that it can harm you. Never try to remove asbestos yourself if you are not correctly trained in how to do this safely.
